Pueraria mirifica – Natural hormone replacement therapy

13/08/2017

Pueraria mirifica or White Kwao Krua is a popular herb used in Thailand for its anti-aging effects in both women and men. Recently, Pueraria mirifica has been studied for use in hormone replacement therapy for premenopausal women, where current hormone replacement therapies are often expensive and carry many risks.

Pueraria mirifica is identified to contain valuable phyto-estrogens that have effects similar to the female hormone estrogen, improving symptoms of premenopausal women: irregular menstruation, loss of libido, mood swings, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, weight changes, breast pain.

Compounds isolated from the roots of Pueraria mirifica include isoflavone aglycones (daidzein, genistein, and kwakfurin), isoflavone glycosides (daidzin, genistin, puerarin), and coumestans (coumestrol, mirificoumestan, mirificoumestan hydrate, and mirificoumestan glycol). Miroestrol and deoxymiroestrol were also isolated. Deoxymiroestrol is considered the true phytoestrogen of Pueraria mirifica. Scientists have also proven that this substance has estrogenic activity 100 times stronger than phytoestrogens from soybean sprouts (Soy isoflavones) and is the strongest among plants.

A clinical trial conducted at Ramathibodi Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand on women aged 52 with normal blood count except for blood cholesterol of 207mg% showed that when using 200mg of Pueraria mirifica daily for 4 months, premenopausal symptoms were significantly reduced, bust size increased by 2.5 cm, skin became firmer and smoother, weight increased by 3 kg, especially cholesterol index decreased to 205mg%. No volunteers developed cancer or cardiovascular problems when using Pueraria mirifica for a long time.

Researchers also said that the active ingredient Puerarin is a major isoflavonoid in Pueraria mirifica, which helps regulate estrogen receptor expression and may be an alternative for the treatment of estrogen-dependent conditions. Pueraria mirifica also contains the phytoestrogen miroestrol, which selectively regulates estrogen receptors by competitively binding to estrogen and preventing excessive estrogen receptor activation. In addition, the Genistein component in Pueraria mirifica also has the effect of inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells. Stigmasterol has the effect of lowering cholesterol. Sitosterol has been shown to reduce prostate hyperplasia and inhibit the growth of colon cancer in humans.

Results of clinical trials have shown that Pueraria mirifica may be a safe alternative to current hormone therapy because of its beneficial effects on bone density, sexual function, and cardiovascular health without the risks or side effects associated with hormone replacement therapy.
